My name is Benedictus Dwiagus Stepantoro – or you can call me Agus. For more than two decades I have had the privilege of working in development across Indonesia. Throughout that journey, I have been involved in many areas, from public policy and governance to infrastructure, urban and rural development, institutional strengthening, and capacity development. Yet, if there is one discipline that has consistently shaped how I think and work, it is evaluation.
People often think evaluation is about measuring success or determining whether a project has achieved its targets. While those things matter, I have come to believe that evaluation is something much deeper. At its best, evaluation helps us understand why change happens, how it happens, for whom, and what we can learn to do better next time.
That belief is what inspired me to create this website.
This website is not intended to be another online résumé or portfolio. Rather, I hope it becomes a place where I can share experiences, ideas, reflections, and lessons learned throughout my professional journey. It is a space for thinking aloud, documenting what I continue to learn, and engaging with others who share an interest in evidence, learning, and improving development outcomes.
Like many professionals, I have benefited enormously from the generosity of others who have shared their knowledge through articles, presentations, books, and conversations. This website is my small way of giving something back.
Over the years, I have worked with governments, development partners, consulting firms, civil society organizations, and international agencies. Every assignment has reinforced one important lesson: good decisions require more than good intentions. They require credible evidence, thoughtful analysis, and a willingness to learn.
That is why evaluation fascinates me.
Evaluation sits at the intersection of evidence, critical thinking, and human stories. It combines rigorous methods with practical realities. It asks difficult questions while remaining open to unexpected answers. Most importantly, it reminds us that development is ultimately about people, and that every statistic represents real lives and real experiences.
The evaluation profession itself is also evolving rapidly. New approaches, advances in data science and artificial intelligence, systems thinking, developmental evaluation, and stronger attention to equity, inclusion, and sustainability are changing how we understand impact and learning. I find this evolution both exciting and inspiring, and I believe there has never been a better time to be part of this field.
Through this blog, I hope to explore topics such as monitoring and evaluation, evidence-informed policymaking, infrastructure and development, program design, learning systems, emerging evaluation methods, and the role of technology in shaping the future of evaluation. Occasionally, I may also share personal reflections on professional growth, leadership, and lifelong learning.
I certainly do not claim to have all the answers. In fact, one of the reasons I enjoy evaluation so much is that it teaches humility. Every evaluation reveals something new, challenges assumptions, and reminds us that there is always more to learn.
